A backpacker’s guide to Conwy, Wales

Updated: Jun 14, 2020

A beautiful medieval walled market town in North Wales...

While in the United Kingdom, we ventured into Wales which was only a 2 hour train ride to North Wales from Manchester, England. A train ride with a beautiful scenery over the country side of West England into Wales. We headed straight for Conwy, a small town with the beautiful Conwy Castle, a medieval fortress still standing 700 years later! You will instantly see Conwy Suspension Bridge and River Conwy on the horizon with a towering castle as you arrive into the town. On arrival we thought we could see the town in a few hours, which is not possible. The town of Conwy is small but has so much to offer and so much to do! One main reason being is Conwy Castle is one of the best castles you can visit through out Europe, just amazing how much access you have to the Castle. Very rare at most castles! Most medieval castles in Europe only give you as little as 50%-60% access to wonder a castle and the rest is closed off or unsafe to walk. You can roam all areas of this castle, from the craziest vertical stairways with ropes needed to prevent you from falling down, with signs stating, climb with cautious, to the dungeon prison towers still very well preserved. The £17 ticket is very well worth it!

You can easily spend 2+ hours here venturing through the castle. From the castle head over to Conwy Suspension Bridge a great spot for awesome pictures and a great view of the castle towers.

Once exploring the Castle, you can hit the town of Conwy which is a beautiful medieval town which has even been voted by the Japanese as the most beautiful place in Europe to see. The old town is surrounded by a well preserved wall that can be walked on around the old town. These walls were constructed between 1283 and 1287 and offer some of the towns best views of the towns medieval roof tops. Hit the streets and explore the city restaurants and town pubs, but make sure you stop at the famous Popty Conwy Bakery for some delicious Welch Cakes, which are a traditional treat in Wales. Consisting of fat, sugar and dried fruit, a simply delicious recipe for flat-bread baked on a griddle, they are sooo good! Guilty for splurging on a dozen of these while in Conwy. After maybe go for a walk to work off the Welch Cake calories and check out The Smallest House in all of Great Britain for £1!

After a full day of exploring the town, we met a few locals at a local pub and they were kind enough to invite us to their table due to my husband who talks to everyone where ever we go, before you know it, they were buying us round after rounds of Beer and really got to know the people and lifestyle of Conwy. Goes to show how cool and laid back the people in Conwy are, They even gave us a ride in their car to the train station! A very relaxed town with Welch Cake bakery's and pubs, backed with a beautiful green scenery of mountains across the region. We will definetly return one day to explore more of Wales. But If ever in the UK, be sure to put Conwy in your sights, a must visit in Wales.

A little time lapse video we made of the Smallest House in Great Britain....
