Magnificent views, Monkeys, and fish and chips? Exploring the British territory in Spain...
Located in the British overseas territory in the southwestern tip of Spain on the Iberian Peninsula. This Jurassic aged rock with spectacular views over looking the Mediterranean Sea and views stretching as far as North African continent, makes Gibraltar a must when visiting Spain. Be sure to have your passports handy as you will be crossing an international border into British territory.....
We visited Gibraltar for the day since we were already in the Andalusia region of Spain, which is only about an hour and a half drive from Cádiz. You can fly in which we are sure is quite a experience of its own, as it is one of the most dangerous airports in the world, mostly due to this airport runway being used for Gibraltar's daily traffic which pedestrians and vehicles cross the live runway daily! You will cross the runway by car or foot, which is pretty awesome. You can see most if not all of Gibraltar in a single day. We strongly recommend for the first time, to get a private tour. We did and recommend Inside-Out Tours with Carl, this man is awesome and with so many family roots to the rock, you will not be disappointed. We got to see all the best views, stopping at the Saint Michael's Cave, the Great Siege Tunnels and hang out with the Barbary macaque Monkeys, the only wild monkey population on the European continent. Without a tour you will waste too much time wondering how to get up the mountain rock. You can hike up the road which we will be doing the next time around, but for the first time we wanted to experience everything possible to make the most of our day there. The Rock has hundreds of years of history including the second World War.
No trip to Gibraltar is complete with a stop at Roy's Fish & Chips!! Be sure to go to the right fish and chips! Ask Carl or a local to direct you to the RIGHT Roy's fish and chips and how to order them as well, Don't forget the Pea Mash!! There are many generic spots with fish & chips, be careful. Also be sure to also check out "Main Street" which is Gibraltar's Main Street for all the cool bars and restaurants and if needed hotels as well. This is the old town and main city center.
Our day in Gibraltar video...Enjoy....
