It's curving Ljubljanica River, filled outdoor cafes, divides the city's historic old town from its commercial hub.
Our visit to this beautiful city came about the last week of our month spent in Croatia. Since we were staying in Zagreb for a month, we rented a car for the day and headed North to Slovenia for the city of Ljubljana. The trip was only about an hour and a half from Zagreb and the drive there was amazing due to the beautiful scenery. The border is about 20 minutes northwest of Zagreb.
Ljubljana can be seen in one day, as the historic city is small but rich in history and culture. Walk around the Old Town Square and check out the sites. You can walk across one of many bridges over the Ljubljana river. Along the way you will see many bars and restaurants to dine or shop along all the retail stores surrounding the Old town square. The Ljubljana Castle is positioned pretty much in the center of the city above a small hill. You can take the walking paths up the castle for a nice historic and beautiful scenery but be aware there are some very steep paths to hike up. You can take the Public transport as well to make it easier or even by bicycle as we saw many locals bicycling up the steep paths. There are tours as well, like the "Urban Tourist Train" which takes you around the city landmarks. Plenty of choices on how to see the city and get up to the Castle. Take a boat ride along the Ljubljana River from the many boat tours that are available. If you are lucky enough and are in Ljubljana on a Friday from mid March to October, you can catch the Open Kitchen food market which is awesome! You get the chance to taste and try all the different kinds of Slovenian dishes with other international dishes as well. We even had got the chance to taste some very good Mexican authentic tacos from El Patron, how is that for food diversity in Ljubljana. Lots to see and experience but can all be done in one day!
A tip when crossing the Slovenian Border by car....
When crossing into Slovenia we recommend you stop at the last gas station prior to crossing the border which is called INA to purchase a Vignette as its needed when entering the Slovenia highways. We missed the last gas station so we had to purchase the Vignette after we crossed the border which can be a headache as this is where everyone stops to buy the Vignette pass, including tour buses stopping here as well for bathroom breaks, and it is just a mess. The pass cost €15 and is good for 7 days. There are no day passes.
